Jesus
Poured Out the Holy Spirit
One
of the great expectations of the age of the Messiah was the pouring
out of God's Spirit on all people. This happened on the day of
Pentecost, seven weeks after Jesus' crucifixion. The coming of
the Spirit was something that Jesus had promised to send to the
apostles to give them the power to be His witnesses all over the
world. Prophets like Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Joel had spoken of
this special new time of God's saving work.
The
presence of the Holy Spirit was a key signal that a person belonged
to God and that God was working in that person's life. In the
Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit came to a few specially chosen
people to accomplish great things for God. However, when Messiah
sent the Spirit, the blessing of this holy presence would be for
every true follower; men and women, young and old, would all be
blessed by the Spirit's work.
The
coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost was just another
way that Jesus showed that He was alive and involved in the everyday
lives of His followers, bringing salvation, forgiveness, and fellowship. |
