Why is receiving the Holy Spirit so important?

The Holy Spirit is the gift of God's presence and power inside us! This is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. This power helps us understand the truth of God, overcome the power of sin in our lives, transforms us to become more like Jesus, produces Jesus' character in our lives, empowers us in the face of great challenges, fills us when we worship with each other, fills us when we submit our will to others' needs to bless them, intercedes for us when we pray, makes our bodies a holy temple of God, blesses us with abilities to use to bless God's people, gives us words to say when faced with persecution, and brings us comfort in times of trouble.

Jesus promised before He faced The Passion and its horrible ordeal that He would not leave His followers alone. He would send another comforter or helper to guide, bless, and live with them. This helper was the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is God's anointing given to us, much like the Holy Spirit came to Jesus at His baptism in the a form looking like a dove. This Spirit is our assurance that we are God's precious and valuable children and enables us to have access to the God of all creation any time we approach Him in prayer. While we may feel alone at times, we can be assured that God is always present in us through His Holy Spirit. He will always hear us because of His Holy Spirit. God will lead us and help us through His Holy Spirit. No wonder that the Holy Spirit was the promised blessing of God's new work among people when His Messiah came to earth!
