→ Called on Jesus' Name
vs. 38; 22:16
Jesus'
apostles taught that there was no other person who could truly
save people than the Lord Jesus Christ. They had learned this
truth from Jesus' own teaching when He claimed to be "the
way, the truth, and the life" and He said that "no one
comes to the Father except through Me."
In
this first message about becoming a follower of Jesus, the apostles
emphasized that those who called on the name of the Lord would
be saved! This promise from the Old Testament prophets came true
on this day as three thousand people became followers of Jesus.
The invitation to call on the name of the Lord was repeated by
Jesus' apostles wherever they shared the message of Jesus. In
fact, the message to "call on the name of the Lord"
was given to a man named Saul who persecuted Christians. After
becoming a follower of Jesus, Saul's name was changed to Paul
and he urged people to "call on the name of the Lord"
and be saved as well.
We
call on the name of the Lord when we confess Christ and like Saul,
are baptized into His name trusting that He is our Lord and Savior.
As Lord and Christ, Jesus has the power to save and make us part
of His forever family. Jesus even promised that when we confessed
Him before people, He would claim us as His followers before the
Father and the holy angels of heaven! |
